JLPT Sim
Full-length JLPT practice tests with timed sections, real question formats, listening audio, and scored results — all inside yomeru.ai.
JLPT Sim is yomeru.ai's built-in Japanese-Language Proficiency Test simulator. It lets you take full-length practice tests that mirror the real JLPT as closely as possible — timed sections, authentic question formats, listening audio, and official-style scoring — so you can gauge your readiness before exam day.
What is the JLPT?
The Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is the most widely recognized Japanese language certification in the world. It is held twice a year (July and December) and tests reading, grammar, vocabulary, and listening across five levels from N5 (beginner) to N1 (advanced).
Levels
JLPT Sim covers all five JLPT levels. Each level card shows the number of available tests, your best score, and how many tests you have taken.
| Level | Name | Approx. Vocab | Approx. Kanji | Test Duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| N5 | Beginner (初級) | ~800 | ~100 | 90 min |
| N4 | Elementary (初中級) | ~1,500 | ~300 | 115 min |
| N3 | Intermediate (中級) | ~3,750 | ~650 | 140 min |
| N2 | Upper Intermediate (中上級) | ~6,000 | ~1,000 | 155 min |
| N1 | Advanced (上級) | ~10,000 | ~2,000 | 165 min |
How to Take a Test
Choose your level
Open JLPT Sim and pick a level from N5 to N1. Each card shows how many practice tests are available and your personal stats.
Pick a test
Select one of the available practice tests for that level. You will see the test title, total questions, and section breakdown before starting.
Review the section breakdown
The intro screen shows every timed section, its time limit, and how many questions it contains. Read the important notes — they explain how timing, section flow, and audio work.
Take the test
Work through each section. Navigate between questions within a section freely, flag questions you want to revisit, and move to the next section when ready. Each section has its own countdown timer.

Submit and see your results
When you finish the final section (or when time runs out), submit your answers. The server scores your test immediately and shows a full breakdown — section scores, pass/fail, and percentage correct.
Question Types
JLPT Sim covers every question category found on the real exam. Questions are organized into mondai (問題) — numbered problem groups, each targeting a specific skill.

Timed Sections
Each test is split into timed sections that mirror the real JLPT structure:
- N1–N3 have two or three timed sections: Language Knowledge (vocabulary + grammar) combined with Reading, and a separate Listening section.
- N4–N5 combine Language Knowledge, Reading, and Listening into fewer sections.
Each section runs its own countdown timer. When the timer expires, the section ends automatically and you move to the next one. You cannot go back to a previous section once you advance or time runs out — just like the real test.
One-way progression
Plan your time carefully. Once you move to the next section, your previous answers are locked in. Flag questions you want to revisit before advancing.
Listening Audio
Listening questions include AI-generated audio with natural-sounding Japanese speech. Conversations feature distinct male and female voices so you can follow multi-speaker dialogues clearly.
- Strict mode (default): Audio plays once, matching the real JLPT experience.
- Practice mode: Toggle Practice Mode to allow replays — helpful when studying.
- Example questions: Some listening mondai include an example question with audio so you understand the format before the scored questions begin.
Scoring
JLPT Sim uses scaled scoring that mirrors the official JLPT grading system. Your raw percentage in each category is converted to a scaled score.
Scoring structure
| Level | Sections | Max Score | Pass Minimum |
|---|---|---|---|
| N1 | Language Knowledge (60) + Reading (60) + Listening (60) | 180 | 100 |
| N2 | Language Knowledge (60) + Reading (60) + Listening (60) | 180 | 90 |
| N3 | Language Knowledge (60) + Reading (60) + Listening (60) | 180 | 95 |
| N4 | Language Knowledge & Reading (120) + Listening (60) | 180 | 90 |
| N5 | Language Knowledge & Reading (120) + Listening (60) | 180 | 80 |
To pass, you must meet both conditions:
- Your total score meets the overall pass minimum.
- Every section meets its individual minimum threshold (no section can be too far below average).
Scoring is performed server-side to ensure accuracy.
Results and Review
After submitting, you get a full results breakdown:
- Section-by-section scores — scaled score, raw correct count, and percentage for each section
- Pass/fail verdict — whether you met both the overall and per-section minimums
- Total time — how long you spent on the test
- Question review — go through every question, see your answer versus the correct answer, and read the explanation

The question review lets you filter by category (Kanji, Vocabulary, Grammar, Reading, Listening) and see your answer compared to the correct one, with a full explanation for every question.

All past attempts are saved in your History tab on the JLPT Sim page. You can review any previous test at any time.
Auto-save and Resume
Your progress is auto-saved every 30 seconds. If your browser closes or you lose connection, you can return to JLPT Sim and resume exactly where you left off — your answers, flags, and remaining section time are all preserved.
